Mission & Vision

Horizon Academy empowers students diagnosed with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities to become effective learners and confident self-advocates.

We are the area’s premier school and education center for language-based learning disabilities as well as a valuable training resource to the community.

What sets Horizon Academy apart:

  • We serve students with dyslexia (reading), dyscalculia (math), dysgraphia (writing), executive function disorder (organization and planning), and auditory processing disorder.

  • The Orton-Gillingham Approach to phonetic instruction is at the very heart of all we do at Horizon Academy. Research shows that the most successful intervention for dyslexia is intensive instruction in phonics and phonemic awareness, and our use of the Orton-Gillingham Approach provides this intervention daily.

  • Our small class sizes, individual learning plans, and Orton-Gillingham and Multisensory Math approaches are complemented by additional support in the areas of Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy, and Counseling.

  • Our schoolwide Executive Functioning Curriculum helps students build processes in key areas such as goal setting, planning, prioritizing, and organizing.

  • Students attending Horizon Academy will become strategic learners as they develop time management, self-advocacy, and social skills.

  • Students in our school year program enjoy art, music, Makerspace, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) classes once a week, and P.E. five days a week.

  • We believe these classes are important to the development of the whole child as we encourage the exploration of the interests and passions of each of our students.

  • Our curriculum is adapted to meet the needs of individual students to ensure that they experience school success.
